Plan B

Con mucho dolor, y luego de varios días de intentar varias posibilidades, hemos decidido reemprender el regreso vía Caleta Tortel. No logramos que el kayak se deslice cómo debiera, resultando además demasiado pesado. Por otro lado, las provisiones ya no nos alcanzarían para un tramo demasiado extenso por el hielo. A nuestro regreso, haremos una evaluación más exhaustiva de lo que pasó, y dejará muchas enseñanzas para próximas expediciones. Gracias a todos por su apoyo antes y durante.

With much regret, we've decided to head back to Caleta Tortel, our starting point. The kayak has not performed as expected, one of the reasons being that it is way too heavy. On top of that, our supplies would not stand a very long journey through the Ice Cap at this stage. On our return, we'll thoroughly evaluate the out coming which will surely teach us an enormous deal towards future expeditions. Thank you all for your tremendous support before and during the expedition.

Se nos está poniendo difícil... El kayak no desliza como esperábamos... En breve tendremos que tomar la decisión de si continuar con la idea original o sacar a relucir el plan 'B'. Los tenemos al tanto. Saludos a todos.

This is getting tricky... The kayak is not performing as a sledge as we had hoped... Shortly, we will have to make a decision as to whether we continue with our original idea or pull out plan 'B'. We'll keep you posted. Warm regards to everyone.

El cambio climático | Under the weather

Ayer hicimos el primer kilómetro y medio en el hielo, con el kayak, y con dificultad. Cuando intentamos volver al campamento, los ríos habían desbordado después de todo un día de lluvia y no pudimos cruzar. Tuvimos que sortear una travesía larga por otro camino, y terminamos, bueno, empapados. Así que hoy estuvimos secando equipos. Mañana nos espera otra vez el cruce del río y seguir adelantando en el Hielo. El mejor día: hoy, el peor: mañana. Pero por suerte el cuerpo tiene memoria corta. En fin, seguimos empujando para adelante.

Yesterday we managed our first one and a half kilometre on the Ice Cap, with the kayak, and with great difficulty. When we tried to return to our base camp -it had been raining all day long- the river had flooded and there no longer was a way through. We had a very though crossing through another route and we ended soaking wet! So we had to dry everything today before attempting our return into the Ice tomorrow. The best day; today, the worst; tomorrow. Thankfully, the body has short memory. Oh well, here we go again.

Hielo a la vista | We can see the Ice Cap

Buenas, buenas. Estamos a 200m del Hielo Continental! Trasladar el equipo está llevando MUCHO más de lo pensado. Por el momento tuvimos que dejar medio kayak en la cabecera sur de la laguna. Veremos si podemos volver a buscarlo. Mañana planeamos hacer campamento en el Hielo y empezar a tantear el terreno. Rutina: nos levantamos 5am, alrededor de las 8 empezamos a caminar hasta las 5/6 de la tarde y a las 8-8.30 estamos en el sobre. Estamos compitiendo por quién tiene más olor -a Huemul, digamos-. Los pocos metros que nos quedan para llegar al Hielo nos llevaran 4 ó 5 horas de trabajo! Para que se den una idea! Saludos a todos y muchas gracias por los mensajes de apoyo. El martes que viene nos hacen una nota por radio, en breve les pasamos los datos.

Hello, hello. We are 200m from the Ice Cap! To move all the gear and supplies is taking a LOT longer than anticipated. For the time being, we had to leave half a kayak behind, at the Southern tip of the lagoon. We'll see if we can go back for it. Tomorrow we hope to finally camp in the Ice and begin to investigate the terrain. Routine: wake up at 5am, start walking at 8am until 5-6pm, and sleeping by 8-8-.30 pm. We are competing to see who is the smelliest at the moment! The few meters that separate us from the Ice Cap will take us 4 to 5 hours to cover! Thanks for all your messages of support.

Hippocamelus bisulcus

Estamos hoy a la vera del lago, con buen clima, curando heridas -Pablo con rodilla hinchada- y limpiando equipos. Juan se fue en exploración a los Hielos para ver dónde hacemos el próximo campamento. Y de regalo inesperado, se nos apareció un Huemul -especie en extinción, poca gente ha visto uno- que nos visitó un buen rato y posó para nuestra sesión fotográfica.

Here we are, by the lake, with good weather, cleaning gear, curing wounds -Pablo's knee is hurting badly-. Juan went to explore the nearby Ice Cap for our next camping site. And the most wonderful surprise, an Andean Deer -Huemul- which is in the verge of extinction appeared before our very eyes and kept us company for a while.

Puf!

Después de tres días agotadores de porteo, pero acompañados de un clima espectacular, llegamos al punto 12 del mapa que se ve en el mensaje anterior. Agotados, pero contentos de haber logrado pasar todo el equipo a través de roca suelta, mallines, pantanos y bosques de espinillos, nos permitimos mañana un día de reagrupamiento, organización y merecido descanso. Pasado mañana, nos espera el Hielo Continental. Allá vamos...

After three exhausting days -accompanied by spectacular weather- we've arrived to waypoint 12 shown in the map in the previous post. Tired, but happy to have been able to transport all of the gear and supplies across very difficult terrain, tomorrow, we allow ourselves a day of re-grouping, organizing and well deserved rest. The day after, the Continental Ice Cap awaits...

En ruta | On route

Estamos entre el punto 10 -48º17'17.30"S,73º30"02.31"W- y 11 -48º17'41.99"S,73º30"00.93"W- que muestra el mapa, trasladando el equipo entre dos lagunas, bautizadas de acá en más 'de las lágrimas'. Calculamos llegar al hielo en 4 ó 5 días.

Para aquellos en Argentina, salió esta semana una nota sobre la expedición en la revista Aventura.

FUERZA PUMAS!!!

Caleta Tortel

36 horas, 500km de pavimento, 500km de ripio, cruces fronterizos y nevadas después, finalmente llegamos a Caleta Tortel. Un pequeño pueblo de pescadores construído sobre palafitos, dónde las casas se comunican por pasarelas. El lugar, impresionante.El tiempo es miserable, lluvia y bajas temparturas por la noche. Un agradecimento muy especial para Arturo y Helena de O2, quienes nos trajeron hasta aquí. Después de dos años, listos para salir, mañana, el gran día.

After 36 hourse, 500km of tarmac, 500km off-road, border crossings and snowfall, we finally arrive to Caleta Tortel. A small village of fishermen, where houses are linked via footbridges. The setting, unbelievable. The weather, quite miserable; rain and low temperatures at night. A special thanks to Arturo and Helena from O2 who brought us all the way here. After two years, we're ready to go, tomorrow, the big day.

Llegando | Getting there

Ya estamos en Buenos Aires. Cada vez nos gusta menos volar. Mejor tener los pies en la tierra...o en el hielo! Al menos podemos manejar nuestro destino, o pensamos que lo hacemos.
Anoche tuvimos un asado de despedida con los viejos amigos de siempre: el estómago está lleno; el espíritu listo.
No se alcanza lo que no se sueña, decía el poeta.
Nosotros soñamos mucho. Falta sólo ver si lo lograremos.

Finally in Buenos Aires. We don't like the idea of flying anymore. It's better to have your feet on the ground...or on the ice! At least, we can manage your destiny, or so we like to believe.
Last night we had an Argentinean barbecue with the good old friends: the belly is full, the spirits, high.
You can't reach what you haven't dreamt.
We've dreamt a lot. We'll see now if we can make it happen!
