Pero vayamos por partes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Los cinco días que pasamos en los hielos haciendo porteos fueron difíciles no por el esfuerzo físico en sí, sino más bien porque nos dábamos cuenta que el tiempo se iba y no avanzábamos tan rápidamente como esperábamos...la expedición se nos escurría de entre las manos y muchas cosas no funcionaban bien. Rompimos dos bastones. El kayak no deslizaba. Teníamos mucho peso. Empezamos a barajar distintas alternativas. Hicimos porteos e improvisamos un nuevo trineo con los remos. Seguimos adelante. Avanzar tres kilómetros quería decir caminar 18!!! El terreno no es fácil. La entrada al hielo tiene partes que semejan dunas gigantes de más de 25 metros de altura y partes de laberintos de grietas separadas por paredes de 3 o más metros de altura. El terreno es de una gran belleza pero aterrador al mismo tiempo. Caminar por este laberinto requiere de una gran concentración. No hay tiempo para fotos. No hay tiempo para gozar. El viento llega de improviso y te tira al suelo: hay que esperar y poner el cuerpo. Las crestas son de hielo y patinan: caerse es correr el riesgo de una pierna rota...o más. Caminamos a lo largo de grietas que parecen aguantar, por ahora. Yo cruzo los dedos Por la noche contamos cuantas vidas hubiéramos perdido si fuéramos gatos: dos, tres...más! Estamos contentos de estar enteros. La carpa, hundida en su pozo, nos protege. Al menos por ahora. Comemos, hacemos cuentas, vamos a dormir. Tratamos de dormir. El frío helado del hielo perfora nuestra carpa, nuestras bolsas de duvet. Me pongo la campera, ahora se esta un poco mejor! Todo está húmedo. Nuestros cuerpos huelen mal. Quiero ir al baño. El viento aulla afuera...no, mejor espero hasta mañana!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Por la mañana, más tranquilos y luego de desayunar, decidimos una vez más seguir adelante, dar batalla. Pero a mediodía nuestro progreso es escazo y nos damos cuenta que no hay más tiempo. Estamos en el punto de no retorno y con comida para diez días más es muy arriesgado seguir adelante. Pusimos mucho. Nuestros amigos y sponsors pusieron mucho. No llegar es parte del juego y lo aceptamos. Volver a casa es lo único importante.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tomada la decisión hacemos números. Abandonamos el kayak - trineo y nos llevamos con nosotros un poco de comida para 6 días: medio desayuno para cada uno por día, algunos chocolates, cenas, té, sopas, jugos y 4 latas de atún! La temperatura sube y esto no es una buena noticia. La nieve se empieza a derretir rápidamente y junto con la lluvia que no para ni por un minuto durante los próximos días nuestro escape se vuelve un infierno. Empezamos los porteos. Nuestros esquíes se hunden en la nieve agua. La roca patina y se vuelve traicionera. Juan desciende hasta la primer laguna para preparar el campamento mientras yo me quedo a trabajar en los porteos. Al final del día el agua pasó todas nuestras protecciones. Estamos empapados y con mucho frío.  Comemos algo caliente dentro de la carpa. Llueve toda la noche y no puedo dormir. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Al día siguiente seguimos el descenso. Los ríos desbordan y nuestra carpa queda flotando en el agua  mientras nosotros hacemos porteos. Ateridos y cansados resolvemos la situación. Nuestro teléfono satelital no quiere funcionar y no podemos arreglar por un barco que nos recoja en la costa. Nuestras cocinas tampoco funcionan!  Todo sumado no fue un gran día. Decidimos compartir una lata de atún como desayuno y un chocolate por cabeza durante el día. Y mucho jugo. El cansancio hará pasar inadvertida la falta de cena...o eso esperamos. Mi estómago se queja.&lt;br /&gt;Recojemos la parte de kayak que nos quedaba y decidimos llevarla abajo con nosotros. Nuestro kayak: cruz y salvación! El río creció de tal manera que los porteos son virtualmente imposibles. Llevamos el kayak atado con cuerdas pero casi lo perdemos en dos oportunidades. Saltamos al agua. Luchamos. Ahora hasta nuestras botas están inundadas. No importa, el movimiento y la adrenalina nos mantienen calientes. Cruzar el río que baja como un torrente se torna muy peligroso. Hoy a la noche descontamos dos vidas más.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Por la mañana vestirse es una fea sensación. Toda nuestra ropa está mojada. La noche no fue buena, mis pies estaban helados y no deja de llover. Hoy tampoco hay desayuno caliente pero una lata de atún es un manjar que se cotiza alto. Salimos bajo la lluvia, hay que cruzar el último lago para alcanzar la costa del mar. Medio kayak es suficiente para hacer los porteos. Después servirá para llevarnos a los dos: yo en el cockpit, Juan en el tambucho con las piernas colgando! Hora y media para hacer tres kilómetros. Acalambrados pero ya estamos del otro lado. Exploramos la costa y no hay barcos a la vista. Intentamos comunicarnos con nuestras VHF pero nadie escucha. Otra noche sin cena. Sigue lloviendo. Hace frío.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No podemos esperar. Hay que arriesgarse. Bien temprano y antes que se levanten las brisas matinales decidimos jugarnos y cruzar el fiordo. Mar abierto. Los dos en medio kayak. Dejamos los equipos en la costa y llevamos sólo lo esencial para supervivencia. La bolsa de duvet, el bivi sac, nafta para encender fuego y la brújula. Cruzamos casi sin respirar. Cincuenta interminables minutos! Llegamos a la costa. Estamos a salvo. Gastamos nuestra última vida. Sabemos de una granja en la que  habíamos parado en nuestro viaje de ida, estimamos el rumbo y salimos a caminar. Ya no tenemos mucha fuerza pero caminamos. Cada tanto nos asomamos y exploramos el mar en vista de algún barco. No hay nadie. Una, dos horas. Seguimos caminando. Finalmente vemos la granja! Las piernas se mueven más rápidamene ahora. Llegamos. "Hace dos días que no comemos" dice Juan. No hacía falta. Doña Delia ya esta haciendo  tortas fritas y café. No nos separamos de la cocina económica tratando de secarnos los huesos. Comemos, tomamos. Estamos en casa. Finalmente nos comunicamos con el barco de apoyo. El viento impide nuestro inmediato rescate y tenemos que esperar hasta mañana. Nuestro dinero no alcanza asi que saldamos con mi campera. Que importa!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El resto es historia fácil. Cuatro días de viaje non stop a través de la Patagonia: barco, buses, taxis, aviones. Casi sin dinero. Las tarjetas de crédito acá no sirven...Esto es 100% aventura hasta el final.&lt;br /&gt;Ya estamos en casa. Mirando hacia atrás no podemos dejar de sentir un poco de tristeza. Pusimos mucho. Pero sentimos que todavía se puede dar más. La Patagonia no nos dijo "adiós". Sólo dijo "aurevoir", hasta la vista. La ruta de océano a océano a través de los hielos continentales es todavia un desafío abierto a todos. Nosotros pensamos volver!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En las próximas dos semanas subiremos a esta página fotos y seguramente también algunas filmaciones. No se vayan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gracias,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pablo y Juan Basombrío.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;We are sorry we've disapeared for some time...it wasn't that we were depressed, but the satellite phone suddendly stoped working and so we've been cut out from civilization!!!&lt;br /&gt;We are now home, but coming back wasn't easy at all; it was an adventure within the expedition. The five days we spent in the Ice were difficult not just because the effort but also because we realized that our progress was slower than expected...the expedition was slipping away and quite few things did not work out well. We broke two walking poles. The kayak - sledge did not want to move. We were very heavy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We improvise a sledge with our paddles. We keep moving. To make three kilometres we have to walk eighteen! The terrain isn't easy. This section of the Ice field has areas that seem like giant sand dunes of more than 25 metres of altitude; some other areas are endless mazes separated with walls of three or more metres high. Everything is beautiful and terrifying at the same time. To walk along such a terrain requires all of your attention. There is no time for photos. No time to enjoying. The wind arrives at once and pulls you down: you have to stop and lean your body. The higher sections are icy and one risks slipping and at least break a leg.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We walk along crevasses that seem very steady. I cross my fingers. At night we count how many lives we would have lost if we had been cats: two, three...more! We are happy we are in one piece. Our tent, down in its hole, protects us. At least tonight. We have dinner, make numbers, go to sleep. We try to sleep. The cold is intense. I put on my jacket; now is better. Everything is wet. Our bodies smell really badly. I feel like going to the loo. The wind is strong out there...I better wait till tomorrow morning! &lt;br /&gt;In the morning, after breakfast, a bit more relaxed, we decide to fight back and keep going. By mid afternoon our progress is poor and we realize that we run out of time. We are in the "non turning back" point and food for only ten more days. To keep going ahead is very risky. We put a lot. Our friends and sponsors put a lot. But not to make it, is part of the game. To go back home safe is the only thing that counts in the end.&lt;br /&gt;Decision taken decision maden.. We leave the kayak - sledge behind and take with us food for 6 days: half a breakfast per person, some chocolates, dinners, tea, soups, juices and 4 tuna fish tins! The temperature rises and this is not good news. The snow melts and together with the non stoping rain makes things worse. We start taking thing out the Ice Field and down the mountain. Our skies stick to the wet snow. The rock is very slippery and tricky. Juan goes ahead to prepare the new camp. I stay to carry on taking the stuff down. At the end of the day we are soaked and cold. We have something for dinner inside the tent. It rains all night long. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The day after we continue to take our load down. There are new rivers everywhere now and our tent is floating in the water while we are out there working. Tired and soaked we solve the situation the best we can. Our satellite phone does not work eny more and we cannot arrange for a boat to come and pick up us by the shore. Our stoves also stop working for some unknown reason! I think is due to the quality of the fuel. Not a great day altogether. We decide to share a tuna fish tin and a chocolate each per day. And a lot of juice. We hope the tiredness will help us to pass over diner. My stomach is complaining.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We take with us the second half of the kayak that we had left behind. The river is now taking lot of water and taking the load down is virtually impossible. We tight the kayak with a rope but almost lose it a couple of times. We jump into the water. Fight. Even our boots are soaked now. It doesn't really matter, the adrenaline keeps us warm. Crossing the river is very, very dangerous. Tonight we take two lives off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the morning, getting dressed is very unpleasant. Everything is wet. Last night I couldn't sleep because I was freezing and didn't stop raining. We don't have any breakfast this morning either. The tuna fish is a commodity. We go out under the rain, we have to cross the last lake to reach the sea. Half a kayak is quite useful to have the job done. In the end we both jump on it, myself in the cockpit and Juan in the hutch, his legs hanging on both sides! Hour and a half to make three kilometres. Cramped, but we are on the other side of the lake. We check out the sea and there is nobody. We try the VHF radios but nobody there either. Another night without dinner. It rains. It's cold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can't wait any longer. We have to risk. Early in the morning and before any wind blows up we decide to take the risk and cross the fjord. Open sea in half a kayak. We leave our gear by the coast and take only the esential for survival. The duvet sleeping bag, the bivy sac, one litre of petrol and a compass. We cross almost without breathing. Fifty endless minutes! We reach the oposite coast. We are saved. I think we spent our last live. We know about a farm that we visited on our way in. We estimate the bearing and start walking. We don't have anything left but we keep walking. Every now and then we check out the sea for boats. Nobody. One, two hours. We keep walking. Finally we spot the farm! Our legs seem to move faster now. We are there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"We haven't got any food for two days", Juan says. It wasn't necessary. Doña Delia is already baking some bread and making coffe. We stay by the kitchen trying to dry out our bones. We eat and drink all day long. &lt;br /&gt;Finally we got a boat to pick us up. The wind is quite strong and we need to wait anoher day. Our cash is not enough. We pay also with my expedition jacket. I really don't care!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What happens next is easy. Four day travelling non stop across Patagonia: boat, buses, taxi, aircraft. Almost with no money. Credit cards are not accepted down there...This is 100% adventure right to the end.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are home now. Looking backwards I can't help but feel a bit sad. We put a lot. But think we can do better. Patagonia didn't say "goodbye". It only said "aurevoir", see you again. This route, ocean to ocean across the Ice fields is still an open challenge. And we are thinking in going back!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the next two weeks we will upload on this website some photos and hopefully also some films. No logramos que el kayak se deslice cómo debiera, resultando además demasiado pesado. Por otro lado, las provisiones ya no nos alcanzarían para un tramo demasiado extenso por el hielo. A nuestro regreso, haremos una evaluación más exhaustiva de lo que pasó, y dejará muchas enseñanzas para próximas expediciones. Gracias a todos por su apoyo antes y durante.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;With much regret, we've decided to head back to Caleta Tortel, our starting point. The kayak has not performed as expected, one of the reasons being that it is way too heavy. On top of that, our supplies would not stand a very long journey through the Ice Cap at this stage. On our return, we'll thoroughly evaluate the out coming which will surely teach us an enormous deal towards future expeditions. Cuando intentamos volver al campamento, los ríos habían desbordado después de todo un día de lluvia y no pudimos cruzar. Tuvimos que sortear una travesía larga por otro camino, y terminamos, bueno, empapados. Así que hoy estuvimos secando equipos. Mañana nos espera otra vez el cruce del río y seguir adelantando en el Hielo. El mejor día: hoy, el peor: mañana. Pero por suerte el cuerpo tiene memoria corta. When we tried to return to our base camp -it had been raining all day long- the river had flooded and there no longer was a way through. We had a very though crossing through another route and we ended soaking wet! So we had to  dry everything today before attempting our return into the Ice tomorrow. The best day; today, the worst; tomorrow. Thankfully, the body has short memory. Estamos a 200m del Hielo Continental! Trasladar el equipo está llevando MUCHO más de lo pensado. Por el momento tuvimos que dejar medio kayak en la cabecera sur de la laguna. Veremos si podemos volver a buscarlo. Mañana planeamos hacer campamento en el Hielo y empezar a tantear el terreno. Rutina: nos levantamos 5am, alrededor de las 8 empezamos a caminar hasta las 5/6 de la tarde y a las 8-8.30 estamos  en el sobre. Estamos compitiendo por quién tiene más olor -a Huemul, digamos-. Los pocos metros que nos quedan para llegar al Hielo nos llevaran 4 ó 5 horas de trabajo! Para que se den una idea! Saludos a todos y muchas gracias por los mensajes de apoyo. We are 200m from the Ice Cap! To move all the gear and supplies is taking a LOT longer than anticipated. For the time being, we had to leave half a kayak behind, at the Southern tip of the lagoon. We'll see if we can go back for it. Tomorrow we hope to finally camp in the Ice and begin to investigate the terrain. Routine: wake up at 5am, start walking at 8am until 5-6pm, and sleeping by 8-8-.30 pm. We are competing to see who is the smelliest at the moment! The few meters that separate us from the Ice Cap will take us 4 to 5 hours to cover! Como decía Eric Shipton mientras preparaba su expedición a estos mismos lugares hace casi 50 años: "sacatelo de encima". Ese par de medias por si...tiralo! Otra linterna no vaya a ser que....tirala! Solo lo esencial. A pesar de todo nuestro peso total será de 160 kgs!!! Casi 60 kgs de comida, 17 kgs de combustible, 30 kgr del kayak, mas abrigos, carpa, cuerdas, elementos de escalada y de seguridad, equipos de navegación y comunicación, fotografía y filmación, etc., etc., etc.&lt;br /&gt;Voluntarios???&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;One of the "must" to be successful in this kind of expeditions is to travel as light as possible. We've checked the list of equipments once and again to be sure that we are not forgetting anything but also to be sure that we are not taking with us anything which is not essential: in the end we will need to carry all on our backs! As Eric Shipton used to say as he prepared his expedition to this very same region almost 50 years ago: "chuck it out". That extra pair of socks...chuck it out! That extra torch in case of...chuck it out! Only the essentials.  Nonetheless, our load weights 160 kgs!!! Hace mucho se viene hablando del retroceso de los glaciares en la zona del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur, sobre todo del retroceso del glaciar Perito Moreno en el Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, quizás por ser este de fácil acceso para el turismo. Sin emgargo, el glaciar Jorge Montt, nuestra puerta de entrada a los hielos, habría perdido 300 metros de altura y retrocedido entre 9 y 10 kms en los últimos 30 años!!!&lt;br /&gt;La foto de arriba muestra al glaciar tal como era en 1976; la foto de abajo muestra al glaciar en abril de 2007.&lt;br /&gt;Cambio climático?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;As he was editing the maps for our expedition, Diego Vallmitjana took notice of something that is at least very worrying. Since some time ago we've been talking about the retrieve of the glaciers in the area of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, notably the Perito Moreno glacier in the Los Glaciares National Park, perhaps for being this very easily accessible by tourists. Pablo en Londres, sigue otra rutina dividida entre kayak, caminatas con mochilas y salidas con un "trineo" construido con ruedas de auto! Ya sale con tres ruedas y espera aumentar hasta cinco.&lt;br /&gt;Las llamadas de larga distancia ya son casi diarias mientras se controlan los últimos detalles del alistamiento y los permisos pertinenes de los distintos organismos de Chile y Argentina. Las negociaciones con los sponsors todavía continúan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;As the departure day approaches we work harder on our training: Juan in Buenos Aires follows a routine specially designed by a personal trainer and put on 7 kgs! El comportamiento general del bote fué muy bueno tanto con olas de costado como de atrás. A pesar de no tener timón se pudo controlar su dirección sin problemas y sobre todo se mostró muy veloz. Los compartimentos estancos funcionaron bien. Después de las pruebas Luis lo llevó al astillero para una revisión general. Ah! El nombre del kayak es "Fram" tal como se llamara el barco del explorador noruego Nansen para intentar llegar al Polo Norte entre  1893 y 1896. Al igual que Nansen, nosotros también esperamos que nuestro bote flote sobre los hielos!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Finally our kayak is ready and Juan had the opportunity to go out and tested it. The general behavior of the boat was good and she was very fast. Even without the rudder it wasn't difficult to keep direction. The bulks worked also very well and kept tight. After the test Luis took her for a general check out. By the way, the name of the kayak  is "Fram" as per the boat built by Norwegian explorer Nansen for his journey to the North Pole between 1893 and 1896. Luis Videla, de Asiak kayaks, nos cuenta como esta adaptando el Albatros a las necesidades de nuestra expedición. Uno de los problemas más importantes que enfrentamos es el tema del peso total de los equipos que tendremos que transportar y Luis esta logrando que el kayak pese entre 10 y 15 kg menos del modelo estandar sacando pintura y material; cambiando las tapas de las bodegas por tapas más livianas; y finalmente modificando la popa y la pedalera. Luis está muy contento con el resultado e incluso espera que sea mejor que el original! Luis Videla, from Asiak kayaks, tells us how he's adapting the Albatros to the needs of our expedition. One of the key problems that we are facing is the total weight of equipment that we will need to carry and Luis has managed so far to save in between 10 and 15 kg compared to the standard kayak by saving in painting and material; modifying the hatches and finally by modifying the stem and the foot rest. Luis is very happy with the result so far and hopes that this will be even better that the original!
